Slant is what makes cursive look good

The single most visible difference between practiced and unpracticed cursive is not letter shape but consistency of lean. Letters that vary between upright and 60° read as messy even when every individual form is correct. A faint slant line every few centimeters gives the eye something to check against, and consistency arrives much faster than it does through repetition alone.

Choosing the angle

American school cursive (Zaner-Bloser, D'Nealian) sits around 75–80° from the horizontal, a gentle lean. Traditional copperplate is far steeper at 55°. If a child is being taught a specific program, match its angle; otherwise 78° is a safe default that looks natural without being difficult.

Do not over-rule the page

Slant guides every centimeter become visual clutter and children start writing between them like columns. Three x-heights apart is roughly right, enough to check against, sparse enough to ignore. Set the guide spacing to zero once the lean is consistent. Knowing when to remove them is a judgment call, and the usual signal is that the child stops looking at the guides rather than that the writing becomes perfect. Slant tends to hold up once the hand has the movement, and going back to guided paper for a week after a break is normal rather than a regression. What does not help is leaving the guides on indefinitely, because writing that depends on them does not transfer to the unruled paper every exam and job application uses.

Printing it accurately

This only measures correctly if your printer doesn't rescale the page. In the print dialog set Scale: 100%, not "Fit to page" or "Shrink oversized pages". If you're not sure it worked, print the calibration page, measure the ruler on it with a real ruler, and it will tell you exactly what your printer is doing to the page.
