The A-series advantage
A4 folded in half is exactly A5, and folded again is A6. If you are making a booklet or a folded planner insert, starting from A4 means every fold lands on a standard size and your grid stays proportional. Letter has no such relationship — half a Letter sheet is not a standard size anywhere.
Choosing a spacing for A4
On A4, 5 mm gives roughly 38 dots across the usable width and 55 down. Drop to 3 mm for detailed technical work and you get about 63 × 92, which is dense but still legible. Above 8 mm the grid stops guiding handwriting and starts constraining it.
Printing without the driver interfering
Set Scale to 100% and Paper Size to A4. If your printer only holds Letter, expect roughly 6 mm of the A4 page height to be cropped — print at 100% anyway and lose a little from the bottom, rather than scaling down and losing accuracy across the whole sheet.
Printing it accurately
This only measures correctly if your printer doesn't rescale the page. In the print dialog set Scale: 100% — not "Fit to page" or "Shrink oversized pages". If you're not sure it worked, print the calibration page, measure the ruler on it with a real ruler, and it will tell you exactly what your printer is doing to the page.
