Where a fine grid earns its keep
Two millimeters is the working scale for laboratory plotting where you need to read a value between gridlines, for detailed cross-sections, and for scale drawings at 1:50 where a square is 10 cm. Below 2 mm most people cannot reliably distinguish adjacent lines by eye, and the sheet turns into gray texture.
Line weight becomes critical
At this density, line weight matters more than on any other grid. A 0.5 pt line at 2 mm spacing covers about a tenth of the paper in ink; the same weight at 10 mm covers a fiftieth. Drop the weight and lighten the color, or the sheet reads solid gray. If you are printing on an inkjet, expect some bleed to close up the finest lines.
Add major lines or you will lose count
Counting to a coordinate on a 2 mm grid without heavier lines is genuinely difficult. Turn on major lines every 5 squares for a centimeter grid over the top, which is exactly how commercial millimeter paper is printed. Traditional millimeter paper actually uses three line weights rather than two: a hairline every millimeter, a medium line every 5 mm, and a heavy line every centimeter. This generator gives you two weights, the base and the major, so setting major lines every 5 squares gets you the centimeter grid that does most of the counting work. If you want the intermediate weight as well, print the sheet twice at different weights and overlay, though in practice very few people need it.
Printing it accurately
This only measures correctly if your printer doesn't rescale the page. In the print dialog set Scale: 100%, not "Fit to page" or "Shrink oversized pages". If you're not sure it worked, print the calibration page, measure the ruler on it with a real ruler, and it will tell you exactly what your printer is doing to the page.
