Coarse grids are a feature, not a compromise
Half-inch squares give about 16 across an A4 sheet, which sounds sparse until you consider who needs them. Children learning to plot coordinates need a square big enough to place a point in deliberately. Anyone working with a marker, a thick pencil or shaky hands needs the same. And for a quick plot where you want six or eight data points readable from across a room, a fine grid actively gets in the way.
Inch squares on a metric sheet
A4 is a metric page and half an inch is an imperial spacing, so the grid does not divide the page evenly. You get a partial square at one or two edges. This is unavoidable and harmless, but it means you should not use the page edge as a measurement reference. If whole squares across the full width matter to you, use a metric spacing on A4, or take the half-inch grid on US Letter, where the arithmetic is cleaner.
Where it beats quarter-inch
Quarter-inch is the default school graph paper in the US and is the right choice for most secondary math. Half-inch earns its place at the two ends: with young children, where the fine grid is discouraging and errors come from miscounting rather than misunderstanding, and with adults doing rough layout work, furniture placement, garden beds, seating, where each square stands for a foot or a meter and you want to see the whole plan at once.
Printing it accurately
This only measures correctly if your printer doesn't rescale the page. In the print dialog set Scale: 100%, not "Fit to page" or "Shrink oversized pages". If you're not sure it worked, print the calibration page, measure the ruler on it with a real ruler, and it will tell you exactly what your printer is doing to the page.
