Why a grid beats an app
A paper tracker is visible without being opened, which is most of what makes tracking work. It sits on a desk or inside a notebook where you see it without deciding to look, and filling a box is a two-second action with no notification, streak-shaming or subscription attached.
How many habits to track
Fewer than you want to. Trackers with fifteen rows tend to be abandoned within a fortnight, because a mostly empty grid reads as failure. Three to six habits is where most people sustain it. Set the row spacing larger and simply use fewer rows — white space is not wasted here.
Other uses for the same grid
The same layout works as a chore chart, a reading log, a medication record, a practice log for an instrument, or a class attendance sheet. Set the column count to seven for a weekly version, or turn the numbers off if you would rather write your own headings.
Printing it accurately
This only measures correctly if your printer doesn't rescale the page. In the print dialog set Scale: 100% — not "Fit to page" or "Shrink oversized pages". If you're not sure it worked, print the calibration page, measure the ruler on it with a real ruler, and it will tell you exactly what your printer is doing to the page.
