Why hexes instead of squares
On a square grid, moving diagonally covers about 1.41 times the distance of moving orthogonally, so every game using squares needs a fudge rule for diagonal movement. On a hex grid every neighbouring cell is the same distance away, which removes the problem entirely. That is why wargames and many map-based systems have used hexes since the 1960s.
Sizing hexes for miniatures
The size control here sets the circumradius, center to corner. For 25–28 mm miniatures on a battle map, a 25 mm circumradius gives a hex about 43 mm across the flats, which comfortably holds a standard base. For overland travel maps where each hex is a few miles, 10–12 mm is plenty and gets far more hexes on the sheet.
Beyond gaming
Hex grids are also used for organic chemistry ring structures, for honeycomb quilting patterns, and in cartography for equal-area binning. The same sheet works for all of them; only the scale changes. Chemistry wants roughly 5 mm, small enough that a fused ring system stays compact and you can still write substituents around the outside. English paper piecing works in finished hexagon sizes, commonly half an inch, three quarters or one inch measured side to side, and the drawn line is the finished edge with the seam allowance added when you cut. Equal-area binning in cartography and data visualization wants whatever cell size makes your densest region readable, which is usually found by trying two or three.
Printing it accurately
This only measures correctly if your printer doesn't rescale the page. In the print dialog set Scale: 100%, not "Fit to page" or "Shrink oversized pages". If you're not sure it worked, print the calibration page, measure the ruler on it with a real ruler, and it will tell you exactly what your printer is doing to the page.
