Match the grid to the units you are working in

If your dimensions are in inches, a metric grid means converting at every step, and conversion is where mistakes enter. A quarter-inch lattice lets you count dots directly: four dots to the inch along any axis, so a 3 inch edge is twelve intervals. This sounds trivial and is not, the whole reason to sketch on a lattice is to stop doing arithmetic while you are thinking about form.

Quarter-inch is a good default for object sketching

It is coarse enough that a small object fits on the sheet at a useful size, and fine enough to place detail. A cube drawn eight intervals to a side is two inches on the paper and sits comfortably on Letter with room for two or three more views. Finer than quarter-inch and the dots start reading as texture rather than reference points; coarser and you lose the ability to place anything precisely.

Woodworking and furniture sketching

This is where quarter-inch isometric dot paper does most of its work in practice. Furniture is dimensioned in inches and fractions in the US, joinery is easier to think about in three dimensions than in orthographic views, and isometric preserves measurement along all three axes, so proportions stay honest. Sketch the piece isometrically to settle the form, then draw the joints separately at a larger scale where the detail actually lives.

Printing it accurately

This only measures correctly if your printer doesn't rescale the page. In the print dialog set Scale: 100%, not "Fit to page" or "Shrink oversized pages". If you're not sure it worked, print the calibration page, measure the ruler on it with a real ruler, and it will tell you exactly what your printer is doing to the page.
