Wide, college and narrow
Wide ruled is 8.7 mm between lines and is standard for elementary and middle school. College ruled is 7.1 mm, which fits about four more lines on a page and is the default for high school and university. Narrow ruled at 6.35 mm is mostly a British and European convention. All three are available here by changing the spacing.
The margin rule
The red vertical line 1¼ inches from the left is not decorative — it exists so that text clears a three-hole punch and a binder ring, and so teachers have somewhere to write. Switch it on with the margin rule option. If you are not filing the sheets, leave it off and gain the extra width.
Ink and paper weight
Standard 80 gsm copier paper will show fountain pen ink through to the reverse. If you write with a wet pen and want to use both sides, print onto 100 gsm or heavier, and keep the rule colour light so it does not compete with the writing.
Printing it accurately
This only measures correctly if your printer doesn't rescale the page. In the print dialog set Scale: 100% — not "Fit to page" or "Shrink oversized pages". If you're not sure it worked, print the calibration page, measure the ruler on it with a real ruler, and it will tell you exactly what your printer is doing to the page.
