Square is a compromise that survived
One to one exists because a square frame fills more of a vertical phone screen than 16:9 does without committing to full vertical, and it crops acceptably to both. That made it the default on Instagram for years and it remains common for feed video and for carousel posts. Planning in the frame you will actually publish in is the whole reason to board at all.
Composing square is genuinely different
Square has no long axis, so the compositional tricks that rely on one stop working. There is no comfortable place to put a horizon, leading lines have less room to lead, and a face fills the frame far faster than in widescreen. The usual result of shooting wide and cropping square is a subject that sits awkwardly high or low. Boarding square first tells you that before the shoot rather than in the edit.
Mark where the interface sits
Square video in a feed still gets overlaid with captions, usernames and buttons, usually along the bottom. Rule a light line across the bottom fifth of each frame and keep anything essential above it. Two frames across on Letter leaves room to note that alongside the shot description. For full vertical the 9:16 sheet is the equivalent.
Printing it accurately
This only measures correctly if your printer doesn't rescale the page. In the print dialog set Scale: 100%, not "Fit to page" or "Shrink oversized pages". If you're not sure it worked, print the calibration page, measure the ruler on it with a real ruler, and it will tell you exactly what your printer is doing to the page.
