The cross is there to teach balance
The name means field-character grid, because the dashed cross makes each square look like the character 田. Those quarter lines are the teaching mechanism. Chinese characters are built from components that must sit in a fixed proportion, and a left-right character like 好 puts roughly equal weight either side of the vertical, while a top-bottom character like 早 divides across the horizontal. Writing inside an empty box teaches you nothing about that. Writing inside a quartered box shows you immediately when a component has crept too far across the line.
When to add the diagonals
Mi Zi Ge (米字格) adds two diagonals to the same square, giving eight sectors instead of four. The extra lines help with strokes that run corner to corner, particularly the falling strokes 撇 and 捺, and with radicals that sit at an angle. The trade is visual noise. Most teaching sequences start with Mi Zi Ge for the first characters, then move to plain Tian Zi Ge as the hand steadies, then to blank squares.
Square size and A4
Chinese exercise books are A4 or close to it, and 20 mm squares are a common classroom size for early learners. Younger children benefit from larger squares, up to 30 mm, since stroke control develops before fine motor precision. Older students working through many characters go smaller to fit more on a sheet. Print at true size so the square is the size you chose, and be aware that writing practice at the wrong scale builds the wrong muscle memory for proportion.
Printing it accurately
This only measures correctly if your printer doesn't rescale the page. In the print dialog set Scale: 100%, not "Fit to page" or "Shrink oversized pages". If you're not sure it worked, print the calibration page, measure the ruler on it with a real ruler, and it will tell you exactly what your printer is doing to the page.
