Quadrants are numbered counterclockwise from the top right

Quadrant I is where both coordinates are positive, and the numbering runs counterclockwise from there: II is upper left with x negative, III is lower left with both negative, IV is lower right with y negative. The convention is worth memorizing early, because textbook questions name quadrants without explaining them, and a student who has only ever plotted in the positive corner has no mental map to place them on.

One sheet instead of four redrawn attempts

The practical case for a centered origin is that you stop discovering the problem partway through. Plot a parabola with its vertex below the axis, or any trigonometric function, or a line with a negative intercept, and a corner origin runs out of room immediately. Starting from the center means the shape of the curve determines the plot rather than the shape of the paper.

Choose your scale from the data

Quarter-inch squares give about 30 across and 40 down inside the margins, so roughly 15 units either side of the origin at one unit per square. If your data runs wider than that, scale in twos or fives rather than cramping the drawing, and label the axis so the scale is explicit. Threes and sevens per square are technically fine and practically a trap, because reading a value off the plot then requires arithmetic and arithmetic invites error. If you need more room, the A4 version is slightly taller.

Printing it accurately

This only measures correctly if your printer doesn't rescale the page. In the print dialog set Scale: 100%, not "Fit to page" or "Shrink oversized pages". If you're not sure it worked, print the calibration page, measure the ruler on it with a real ruler, and it will tell you exactly what your printer is doing to the page.
