55 degrees, and why it is so steep

Copperplate is a pointed-pen hand derived from engraved script, and the steep lean is structural rather than decorative — it lets the pen travel in long, uninterrupted strokes with pressure applied on the downstroke. At a shallower angle the thick and thin transitions fall in the wrong places and the hand loses its character.

Slant guides go close together

Unlike italic, copperplate practice sheets are ruled with slant lines every centimetre or less. You are checking the angle constantly, on every stroke, so the guides need to be within reach of wherever the pen is. Set the guide spacing low — around 1.2 to 1.5 x-heights.

Ascenders run tall

Copperplate proportions are conventionally 3:2:3 — ascender, x-height, descender. Set the ascender multiplier to about 1.4 to get close. The long ascenders and descenders with their generous loops are much of what gives the hand its elegance, and cramping them is the most common beginner error after slant inconsistency.

Printing it accurately

This only measures correctly if your printer doesn't rescale the page. In the print dialog set Scale: 100% — not "Fit to page" or "Shrink oversized pages". If you're not sure it worked, print the calibration page, measure the ruler on it with a real ruler, and it will tell you exactly what your printer is doing to the page.
