Who a fine grid is actually for
Three millimeters suits people whose natural hand is genuinely small, along with miniature and model work, detailed technical sketching, and chart-like layouts where you want a great many rows on a single page. Most handwriting occupies three rows here rather than the two it takes at 5 mm, so the grid guides the line without dictating the letter height.
Dot weight is critical at this density
At 3 mm there are nearly three times as many dots per unit area as at 5 mm, so any excess weight multiplies across the page. Keep the dot size at the low end and the color a genuinely light gray. A weight that looks restrained at 5 mm reads as a solid gray field at 3 mm, particularly on absorbent copier paper where every dot spreads slightly into the fibers.
Check your printer can resolve it
A 3 mm grid asks real accuracy of the hardware. Inkjets on plain paper spread ink and can blur round dots into ovals; older lasers may drop the palest grays entirely and leave gaps in the field. Print one sheet and look at it closely before committing to a stack. If the dots come out inconsistent, raise the weight slightly rather than opening the spacing, patchy dots are worse than heavy ones.
Printing it accurately
This only measures correctly if your printer doesn't rescale the page. In the print dialog set Scale: 100%, not "Fit to page" or "Shrink oversized pages". If you're not sure it worked, print the calibration page, measure the ruler on it with a real ruler, and it will tell you exactly what your printer is doing to the page.
