Where 3 mm earns its place

Five millimeters is the European default and suits most work. Two millimeters is for laboratory plotting where you need to read a value off the page precisely. Three sits between them and is the right choice when you have more data than 5 mm can hold but still want to write a number inside a square occasionally. Electronics schematics, dense statistical plots, and detailed pattern work all land here.

Line weight matters more as the grid gets finer

At 3 mm there are about 67 lines across an A4 sheet in each direction, and at the default line weight that starts to read as gray texture rather than as a grid. Drop the weight to around 0.2 pt and lighten the color, and the grid recedes to where it belongs. This is adjustable in the generator, and it is the single change that makes a fine grid usable rather than oppressive.

Check your printer can actually resolve it

A 3 mm grid asks real accuracy of the hardware. On a worn inkjet the lines can thicken and merge, and on any printer the grid will be wrong if the page is being scaled. Print one sheet and look at it closely before you print thirty. If the lines are blurring into each other rather than sitting crisp, go back to 5 mm rather than fighting the machine.

Printing it accurately

This only measures correctly if your printer doesn't rescale the page. In the print dialog set Scale: 100%, not "Fit to page" or "Shrink oversized pages". If you're not sure it worked, print the calibration page, measure the ruler on it with a real ruler, and it will tell you exactly what your printer is doing to the page.
