The finest of the common imperial rulings
One-eighth inch is what printed quad pads mean by "8 × 8", and it is the ruling to reach for when quarter inch is too coarse to hold the detail you need. With majors set to 8, every heavy line is an inch apart, which gives you a scale readable at a glance instead of one you have to count out. A Letter sheet holds about 66 columns and 86 rows.
Fractional, not decimal
The distinction matters more than it sounds. Engineering paper at 0.1 inch divides the inch into tenths, which suits decimal dimensions and calculation. Eighth-inch divides it into halves, quarters and eighths, which is how timber, fasteners, drill bits and most shop measurements are actually specified. A ¾ inch dimension is six clean squares here and seven and a half awkward ones on decimal paper.
At the limit of what prints cleanly
Eighth-inch squares are about 3.2 mm, and at that density line weight starts to dominate the page. Keep the weight at or below 0.3 pt — anything heavier and the grid fills in visually to a grey wash on ordinary copier paper, where each line spreads slightly into the fibres. If the sheet is going to be photocopied, expect to lose the finest lines altogether and consider quarter inch instead.
Printing it accurately
This only measures correctly if your printer doesn't rescale the page. In the print dialog set Scale: 100% — not "Fit to page" or "Shrink oversized pages". If you're not sure it worked, print the calibration page, measure the ruler on it with a real ruler, and it will tell you exactly what your printer is doing to the page.
