Knitting chart paper — sometimes called knitters graph paper — with rectangular cells rather than squares, because knit stitches are wider than they are tall and a square grid distorts the chart.

The problem with square grids

Almost every free "knitting graph paper" online is just ordinary squared paper. Chart a circle on it and knit the result and you get an oval — squashed vertically, because a typical stocking stitch gauge is around 5 stitches and 7 rows to the inch. The rows sit closer together than the stitches, so the knitted fabric comes out shorter than the chart implied. A proper knitting chart accounts for that.

Setting your gauge

Knit a swatch, measure stitches and rows over four inches, and divide: rows per inch into stitches per inch gives the cell height ratio. At 5 stitches and 7 rows per inch that is 5 ÷ 7 = 0.71. Enter that as the gauge and the printed cells will match your actual fabric, so what you draw is what you knit.

Cross-stitch charts are different

Counted cross-stitch on evenweave or Aida is genuinely square — one stitch is as tall as it is wide. For a cross-stitch chart, set the gauge to 1.0 and you get a true square grid. The heavier line every ten cells is the standard counting convention on every kind of needlework chart.

Printing it accurately

This only measures correctly if your printer doesn't rescale the page. In the print dialog set Scale: 100% — not "Fit to page" or "Shrink oversized pages". If you're not sure it worked, print the calibration page, measure the ruler on it with a real ruler, and it will tell you exactly what your printer is doing to the page.
