Six axes, drawn accurately
A radar chart plots several variables on axes radiating from a common centre, and its readability depends entirely on those axes being at equal angles and the rings being evenly spaced. Freehand they are neither, and the resulting outline misrepresents the data. At 60° you get six axes; set 45° for eight, 72° for five, or 36° for ten.
Know what the shape actually means
The area enclosed by a radar chart is not proportional to anything meaningful — it changes if you reorder the axes, which is a genuine and well-known weakness of the format. Read the individual axis values, and use the shape only to compare two profiles measured on the same axes in the same order. Overlaying two outlines on one chart is where the format earns its keep.
Where they are actually used
Competency and skills assessments, sports performance profiles, sensory evaluation in food and wine, and product comparison against fixed criteria. All of them share one requirement: a small number of axes, five to eight, on comparable scales. Beyond about ten the chart becomes unreadable and an ordinary bar chart does the job better.
Printing it accurately
This only measures correctly if your printer doesn't rescale the page. In the print dialog set Scale: 100% — not "Fit to page" or "Shrink oversized pages". If you're not sure it worked, print the calibration page, measure the ruler on it with a real ruler, and it will tell you exactly what your printer is doing to the page.
